The RPSCA and The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund (RWAF) and PDSA minimum size for a pair of rabbits is 60 sq foot of space.  This equates to a minimum division of sheltered vs run space as 6' x 2' hutch attached to an 8' x 6' run, but you can provide this is any number of ways.

Responsible rescues will adhere to these guidelines and usually ask that accommodation exceeds this minimum.

Outdoor Rabbits need 24hr access to a minimum of 60 sq foot of space allowing them to display their natural behaviours, resulting in happy and healthy rabbits

THIS IS WHAT THAT MINIMUM SPACE LOOKS LIKE ....

A typical hutch and run combination is used to illustrate the sizes because this is the most commonly used way to house rabbits and therefore the most relatable.

IT THEN NEEDS TO SITED ON A HARD SURFACE...

The bunnies need to have 24 hour access to this space so it needs to be safe from bunnies digging out and foxes pushing or digging under.  You can then link it to a run on the grass if you wish.
It is not essential to give your rabbits access to grass as they will get what they need in the form of hay.  Keeping them safe, with enough exercise space is more important. Cheap paving slabs can be laid directly onto the ground with no need for expensive landscaping.

But it would be much better, and more fun for your bunnies (and you) if you had something a bit more like these .... For inspiration see our IDEAS GALLERY

Indoor Rabbits

Space for house bunnies is harder to define.  They will need a large area to call their own. It can be as simple as their litter tray, water and food in a corner of the kitchen, or they can have a whole room dedicated to their living quarters.  Most owners want somewhere safe for their bunnies when they are out of the house so designate a penned off area for them. This does need to be least 8' x 6'.  It is not acceptable to shut them into a pet shop cage but this can be used as a base area for them with the door removed (feet can get trapped in the door as it opens downwards).
